"Now showing in theatre 1: 'Denial.' Theatre 2: Projection. In theatre 3, we're pleased to present a double feature: 'Hypocrisy' and 'Judgment.'"
So the boyfriend went off to his gig. I flipped off the TV (whatever the hell he was watching), drew myself a lavender-scented bath and grabbed the current "O" to re-read Martha Beck's article on projection. Seemed timely since it's a theme that has kept recurring this week. (And I'm speaking about myself.)
Here are a few excerpts from Martha's article:
"...we become hyperalert to anything that reminds us of the behavior we're denying in ourselves, focusing with unusual intensity on the slightest hint of that behavior in others...We rarely see our own delusion; we just find ourselves ruminating on the vices of others...we can turn our unconscious hypocrisy into a wonderful tool for personal growth: Phase One. Write your rant. To begin, list all the nasty, judgmental thoughts you're already thinking about Certain People...Phase Two. Change Places. Now go through your written rant and put yourself in the place of the person you're criticizing."
Damn those Certain People! Always forcing to me to, you know, grow.
